After a extended cold winter, it is time to fish. Within the next month or so, I hope to take a nice trip for Northern Pike fishing. It has been a long winter, and ice fishing is not much fun in my view, so it will be great to get some action.
The initial few months after ice out are never really that prolific. However, I have found that many of the larger fish move to the spawning stage first, hence creating a great trophy pike chance. I do not like fishing too early on in the year due to my intense dislike of the bitter cold, so I can only fish for 60 minutes at a time or so.
I hope to try fly fishing for northern pike afterward in the year, but I am not positive if I will get the opportunity. It will help if I learn to properly fly fish first. It just seems there is not sufficient time to go regular fishing let alone learning a new style that is so unnatural to me.
I was watching an old in fisherman event where they were fishing for massive lake trout up in Canada. This would also be an remarkable trip I would like to make some day. They also have them in the great lakes, but that does not sound as fun as a Canada fishing trip.
With Pike fishing right around the turn for me, I have relined all my rods and reels and also put new hooks on some lures. I think this is a big place were most fisherman forget about. They imagine all hooks are sharp and will hold fish. While I would never want to jamb a hook in my hand, most cheap lures are really not that sharp if you look at them under a microscope.
The last thing I want to take a chance on is a bad hook set due to shameful equipment. If money is important though, do not pay out the 10 extra bucks on luxurious treble hooks, buy good quality line instead. I always prefer mono filament line over the newer non-stretch lines, but those have been proven to be good too. If you do use a non-stretch line, do not go overboard with the hook set, or you could just snap the line.
However, hooks dull over time, and most hooks on cheap lures are previously dull. You MUST have sharp hooks for Northern’s since they have such a skeletal jaw and mouth.
Besides for that, my gear appears to be ready for my next trip. Optimistically it will come sooner rather than later. We will wait and see. Hopefully this year will prove to be as great a fishing year as last. But just going is still fun enough just to go Pike Fishing .
